Katie Returns from One Week in China

Here are a few highlights of her week-long adventure.  Read the entire story in Adobe Acrobat (PDF).

"I really don’t know where to begin to tell you about this destination, as I was amazed by everything I saw. To tell you the truth, China wasn’t on my list of places I wanted to go in my lifetime, but now all I can think about is going back, and sending people there to experience what I did! And now or in the near future really is the time to go!"

The first city I visited was the historical city of Beijing. There are 4,000 years of history there! China is so much older than the U.S., it is hard to imagine all that has changed in time with their culture, compared to ours. During my stay in Beijing, we were on the go the whole time!
Rickshaw Ride in Hutong The first day we were escorted in rickshaws through Hutong “Old Beijing” and visited a home of a Chinese family who gladly opens up their home to tourists. The Hutongs are narrow streets or alleys.  Then we traveled 30 minutes to see the amazing Great Wall of China. This wall was started in 200 B.C. and it is 4,000 miles long!  Tian'anmen Square is where Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China.

We flew to Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province that lies in the protected valley of the river Wei. From this valley, the emperor Qin Shi Huang unified China for the first time. We visited the Terracotta Warriors and had an exclusive VIP Tour with a visit from the director and the archaeologists that work there.  Over 7,000 terracotta warriors were found in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. It was so amazing to see all of these figures. This is a must see in China.

From Xi'an to Shanghai.  This city is very modern with the most unique architecture, and what is considered the "New York City of Asia".  Shanghai has more the 4,000 skyscrapers, and is about 3 times or more the size of
New York!  Most of this has built up in the last 17 years.

The Bund Waterfront area in Shanghai

In Shanghai, we visited the Shanghai Museum which opened in 1996 with paintings, bronzes, coins, seals, furniture, minority art, and more.  That same evening we attended the Shanghai Acrobatic Show after a Chinese Dinner.  I couldn't believe the flexibility and coordination of the performers!  On our last day, we went to the Silk Factory and watched the amazing technique of silk art weaving.  One silk rug takes more than a year for one to person to make.  After the Silk Factory, we went to the Yuyuan Garden.

The Bund

Yuyuan Garden is a marketplace and social center located in the center of Shanghai's old Chinese quarter, and has beautiful pavilions and miniature lakes.  We walked up to The Bund, a famous waterfront area on the Huangpu River.  What an amazing view! Beijing is the past of China, Xi'an is the present; and Shanghai, the future. Read Katie's full report.
