Hurricane Wilma Cancun
Report: December 2005
|
|
One of our leisure specialists spent a
week in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area courtesy of
Transglobal Vacations and toured several hotels, went on a few
tours, and visited Cozumel. You’ve heard the
reports that Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Cozumel are
not that bad and are ready for business.
Most of these reports are true.
The Rivera Maya is open and waiting with
open arms. Cancun
and Cozumel are taking a little longer, but will
be ready for you very shortly.
|
| |
During the week's busy
schedule, a lot of photos were taken and many
resort properties were seen. We were impressed with the
progress made since Hurricane Wilma hit the area a couple
of months ago.
Cancun and Cozumel really are working hard to get
back to normal.
If anyone is planning on going to the area
now don’t be afraid to book, the Riviera Maya is
open and ready for you.
|
| As far as the
trees are concerned, there’s a lot of
brown, but the green is slowly coming back.
Most of the tops of the palm trees are gone
but they do grow back within a year’s time.
There’s still a lot of work to be done,
but by February 1st, 2006 Cancun and
Cozumel will be ready for tourists once again. |

Our
staff member stayed at the
Iberostar Paraiso Maya.
This is an all-suite hotel and is right
next door to the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo and
Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar.
This resort is very large and very spread
out. A
lot of walking around is required.
They do have staff with carts that will
take you around if you wish.
We recommend doing this as much as
possible. But
hold on tight because they tend to take the curves
a little fast.
|
|
|
There are a variety of restaurants and
buffets at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya including steak, Japanese,
gourmet, American and Mexican.
The nice thing about having 3 resorts side
by side is that you can always go to one of the other
two for a different dining experience.
For
the night owls that like to party, there are
discos on site also.
Most of them close at 1am, but there is at
least one at the Del Mar that closes at 3am.
If you wish to go shopping in Playa Del
Carmen, there are complimentary shuttle buses that
will take you there and back.

For some fun
things to see and do you can spend a day at Maroma
Beach, go on a zip line/canopy tour, snorkel, see
a Mexican Show at Xcaret, Captain Hooks Dinner
Cruise, shop at Playa Del Carmen and spend a day
at Cozumel. At Maroma Beach you can go horseback riding,
snorkeling, take a speedboat tour, take an ATV
tour and more.
The guides are very friendly and make the
experience fun. If you feel adventurous try the zip line tour.
The highest point is 60 feet above the
ground and it was a little scary but worth it.
You can also go snorkeling in the cenotes
on this tour. |

The
Mexican Show at Xcaret was great.
It’s about an hour long with lots of
dancing, singing and beautiful costumes full of
color. We
highly recommend going on Captain Hooks Dinner
Cruise. They
put on a great show and they get you involved.
It’s so much fun.
The food is great also; they’ve got
chicken, steak, lobster, rice, salad, and so much
more.

We were very
impressed on the condition of Cozumel.
They had at least one hotel open for
business, most of their tours, and many shops.
There's alot to do here,
but things are coming along smoothly.
More hotels will be open at the end of
January, although some hotels will be closed until October 2006 due
to the extensive damage. Travel
Travel will always have current information on
the Cancun Riviera Maya areas.
